Mexico Missions Trip 2003

We’re Back, and It’s Time to Update the Site!

July 30, 2003. Apart from being away from Nichelle, the trip was wonderful. We had a small but excellent group. Left to right below are Kevin Hicks, Alyssa Chance, Emilie Skjerli, Lydia Anderson, Karen Chance, and [myself] Doug Wilcox.

I was particularly impressed with how well the girls interacted with the people we met. They were not at all afraid to practice their limited Spanish (check out the Diario link for one amusing exchange), and made many friends (especially Sergio, Manuel, and Alejandro, but I will leave those details for later).

My new digital camera (a Canon PowerShot G2) was a great blessing. I took more and better photos than on any previous trip, and was able to show people where I work, live, etc., by dumping some images from here onto the smaller memory card that shipped with the camera. I must have heard “¿A ver?” (idiomatic expression for “May I see, please?”) about 1,000,000 times. I was able to get some panoramic shots and night photography which would have been impossible with my old point-and-clicker.

One big panorama from the edge of town (covers about 300 degrees)

Of course, our goal was not to take lots of pictures, but to help with evangelistic projects and construction in the children’s home—and anything else the missionaries could use a hand with. I didn’t get a Web site built for them (but will), but was able to fix a printer at a church we visited in Madera (a city up in the mountains about 4 hours away), and get Norton AntiVirus up, subscribed-to, and running on the Tudors’ machine.

There are so many stories to share: Stories about the children who live in the home, stories of the work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the lives of those we met, stories of Mexican culture and its particular trials, stories of our own adventures. I will share those soon.

The Diario (Journal) is Up:

July 14, 2003. Well, I was able to get the live journal ported up, so we should be able to make nearly real-time updates, even from México. Just click on the Diario link at the right.

I found my 2001 trip pictures (finally), but haven’t had a chance to scan any of them and put them into the Photo Journals. There’s always something that I run out of time on.

Older News:

The preparations are well under way for our next trip to Constitución, Chihuahua, from July 14 through 24. We have 6 people going on the trip this year (Kevin Hicks, myself, Karen Chance, Alyssa Chance, Lydia Anderson, and Emilie Skjerli).

The children’s home there, on which we (among many others) have worked, has been in operation for about a year and a half now, although construction to enlarge it and improve it is still ongoing. We are looking forward to meeting the children there, as well as helping with evangelistic activities in Constitución and the surrounding area.

The photo journals will give you a good idea of what the area we’re going to is like. We will be working primarily with Connie and Eldon Tudor, long-time missionaries to “Consti,” and Hmno. Ruben Para, pastor of the church there.

Before the trip, I will be porting my BLOG software over to this page, so I should be able to provide from-the-field updates this year.

Make a Donation Online!

The cost per person for our trip is only about $750. We try to raise that money through donations. In my case, I’ve already paid about half of the money due, and will donate anything above the remaining balance directly to the Tudors for the children’s home. If you would like to contribute electronically, via electronic check, debit card, or credit card, use the PayPal or Amazon Donate links below.

Make a secure, online donation through PayPal or Amazon, even via credit card. Both accounts are set up to send payment to dwilcox@wordsmithdigital.com (not doug@wilcoxfamily.net). Also, you can continue to support the children’s home by starting your Amazon.com purchases from here.

Also, if you want your donation to go directly to the children’s home, rather than cover my trip expenses, just let me know.
